This lecture note entitled 'Mechanical Design for Making Machines' is based on my lecture note, which has been prepared for mechanical engineering students at Meisei University.

Following links are written in Japanese yet.

Introduction

A simple greeting and abstruct of this lecture are shown here.
Chapter 1, Abstruct of Mechanical Design
1.1 What is Mechanical Design?
1.2 Tips of Mechanical Design
1.3 Instances of Mechanical Design
Exercises
We need 'Machines' in our life. In this chapter, we study about a location of the mechanical design in a mechanical engineering field and notions of the mechanical design.

Chapter 2, Strength and Materials
2.1 Basis of Strength
2.2 Mechanical Materials
Exercises
It is important that machins are not broken, and they always work suitably. In this chapter, we study about static strength, motion of machins and typical mechanical materials.

Chapter 3, Machining and Design
3.1 Kind of Machinings
3.2 Accuracy and Design
3.3 Design with Considerations of Machinings
Exercises
In the case of the mechanical design, it is important to have knowledges of machinings. Also, accuracies of sizes are decided in the design stage. We should not demand too higher accuracies, because higher accuracies brings great labors of the machinings.

Chapter 4, Design Technics Using Screws
4.1 Kind of Screws
4.2 Meter Screws
4.3 Strength of Screws
4.4 Practical Design
Exercises
Screws are used in various applications, such as fittings of mechanical parts, motions and determinations of parts' locations. In this chapter, we study the standard of the screws and tips for using the screws.

Chapter 5, Design of Shaft and Bearing
5.1 Design of Shafts
5.2 Couplings
5.3 Fittings of Shafts and Rotating Parts
5.4 Utilizations of Bearings
5.5 Instances of Shaft System
Exercises
Many machins uses rotating motions. In this chapter, components like shafts and bearings are shown. And we consider to design points of rotating mochins with several instances.

Chapter 6, Design of Gear Mechanism
6.1 Kind of Gears
6.2 Structure of Super and Pinion Gears
6.3 Strength of Gears
6.4 Instances of Gear Mechanisms
Exercises
Many machins use gears as a method of power transmission. Because the gears has the great characteristics, such as high transmission efficiency and accurate motions. In this chapter, we consider the points of gear mechanism with several instances.

Chapter 7, Design Technics of Seal Devices
7.1 Abstruct of Seal Devices
7.2 Gaskets
7.3 O-rings
7.4 Oil seals
7.5 Instances of Seal System
Exercises
In the case of the machines that handle fluid or lubricating oil, seal devices are very important. In this chapter, we learn the structure and how to use the typical seal devices.

Chapter 8, Marketing Parts
8.1 Electric Motors
8.2 Mechanical Electronics
8.3 Rotatin Motions
8.4 Linear Motions
8.5 Springs
8.6 Combined Marketing Parts
Exercises
We learned the mechanical components such as screws, gears and bearings in above chapters. We should use the marketing components positively. It brings a prompt mechanical design or development.

Chapter 9, System Design
9.1 What is System Design?
9.2 Design of a Compact Stirling Engine
9.3 Design of Man-Powered Hydrofoil
9.4 Design of a Fish Robot for Turning Test
9.5 Design of a High Speed Fish Robot
9.6 Conceptual Design of Sailing Ship
Exercises
It is important to consider 'balance' in the mechanical design. We learned how to select the components in above chapters. Here, we consider systematic constructions of machines with some instances.

Chapter 10, Aim to Advanced Design
10.1 Higher Performance of Machines
10.2 Sweet Mechanical Design
10.3 Aim to Make Machines
Exercises (Questionnaire)
For the mechanical design, the contents of this lecture is noto so enough. If we design a machine with obeying by a text book or a reference, we cannnot complete the final machine. The mechanical design and a mecahnical deesigner shoud always evolve.
