Purpose of the establishment:

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, study for open and integrated research program with Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology; "Turbulence Control by Fluid-dynamic Devices with New Functions was the biggest project that ever carried out in fluid dynamics, which aimed to develop smart control turbulence, i.e. complex fluid phenomenon . This project was joined by more than 60 researchers from three independent administrative research institutes (National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology and National Maritime Research Institute),and several universities(Kogakuin University, The University of Tokyo, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Keio University, Aoyama Gakuin University and so on ) and invested a total amount of 150 million yen during 2000-2004.

Recently, global environmental problem such as global warming, air pollution and etc. become critical issues. Since drag due to flows and combustion gas are considered to cause such social problems, drag reduction and improvement of combustion efficiency are strongly required. In the research project, we focused on turbulence which plays an important role both in resistance and in combustion, and carried out researches in order to develop methods to control turbulence by use of the newest technology such as MEMS. This study has been finished in March 2005 with distinguished accomplishment.

During the period of research, "Center for Smart Control of Turbulence" was established at NMRI, the project organizer, and organized by the researchers joining to the project as the members of the center, which contributed to research efficiently as well as systematically. Refer to the web site of Center for Smart Control of Turbulence for further information. At NMRI, as part of this project, we carried out the study of microbubbles and lean premixed combustion.

The Committee for Smart Control of Turbulence has been inaugurated in order to develop the outcomes attained by the project. The committee will also examine methods to develop the outcomes and suggest successor projects and new proposals, while opening the outcomes of study for open and integrated research program to the worldwide public.
