Tank test for investigating into underwater fin effect for advanced sail-assisted ships

Effect of position and area of fins upon hydrodynamic forces acting on a model of an advanced sail-assisted ship were investigated by towing tank test. Six kinds of fin arrangements were compared.

Fore center fin
A fin attached at bottom of bow along centerline of a model ship.

Parallel part fins
Two fins at bottom of both sides at parallel part.

Aft fin
A fin attached at bottom of stern along centerline of a model ship.

Measurement of hydrodynamic forces
Hydrodynamic forces acting on a model ship with fins in oblique motion were measured. Effect of heel angle was also investigated.
