2. HOW TO MEASURE THE ICE THICKNESS

The present method utilizes an icebreaking proceses around a ship hull. An intact ice sheet is forced downward at the bow, and consequently broken into small ice pieces. They are rotated, submerged, convected along the hull and finally float up. During the navigation in ice, images are taken continously by a VTR camera. Following figure shows a schematic view of the present method. Some of the ice peaces float up with its vertical surface nearly upright. On a monitor, the length of vertical section of such ice pieces is measured using a caliper. In order to convert the length on a monitor to the ice thickness, a scale with a certain length was put on ice and its image was taken during the measurement.
