The coastal service in Japan is very important
because its share in domestic distribution
is about 40%.
But the industry has a lot of problems, for
example, the deterioration of cooperates'
financial soundness, difficulty of enough
number of sailors and successors, and constant
discount pressure by shipper companies.The
industry needs structural and fundamental
change because of the introduction of competition
and deregulations by authority, wide-spread
information technologies, progress of globalization,
pressure of modal-shift, and so on.
To execute structural change smoothly and
effectively it is essential to get the proper
transportation policies and company consulting
based on accurate forecast and estimation.
But the industry together with its environment
is now changing its structure rapidly.
‚‰t is difficult to fulfill enough accurate
analysis by conventional econometrics approach,
that has been mainly used in this field,
because it assumes that its target system
is constant and it depends on past data.
We think that transportation simulation is
one of the most effective approaches to cope
with the difficulty.
But the physical distribution analysis by
transportation simulation is not popular
and not systematically executed . It often
happens that researchers program single purpose
simulator for each subject.
To secure enough research efficiency and
accuracy and to answer precisely and swiftly
to client requests it is necessary to develop
simulation system that is applicable for
huge and complex target and has enough diversity
and extensity.
This research aims at developing such general-purpose
transportation simulation system through
expanding gradually from simple simulator
to complex one that copes with major domestic
marine transportation articles and that can
solves some of the following topics.
