Research Cooperation With Sao Paulo University

On March 31, 2004, the Independent Administrative Institute, National Marine Research Institute (NMRI) signed an agreement on research cooperation with Sao Paulo University in Brazil. Since 2001, the NMRI has repeatedly exchanged views with Sao Paulo University and has cooperated with the University in individual contract research and joint research on a project-by-project basis, for example, in research on the fluid dynamics acting on FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading units) and prediction of the behavior of drilling tubes. The present agreement was concluded between the NMRI and the Sao Paulo University Foundation, which is responsible for promoting science and technology at the University, and establishes a comprehensive cooperative relationship between the NMRI and Sao Paulo University.

[Content]
The NMRI has concluded a cooperative research agreement with Brazil, which is developing the world’s deepest sea-bottom oil field. The agreement provides for a comprehensive range of cooperation in ship/marine engineering fields represented by analysis of the strength and behavior of offshore structures for sea-bottom oil field development in waves and tidal currents, and includes joint research and information exchanges through exchanges of researchers.

[Expected results]
Exchanges with Sao Paulo University, which has the world’s highest level in this field, will enable more effective utilization of research resources and sharing of research results, and are expected to result in new research topics, accelerated research work, more substantial research results, and popularization of those results.
