Abstract and History
National Maritime Research Institute, being the core research institute for ship technologies, is implementing researchers on technologies for safe and efficient marine transportation, effective utilization of marine resources and spaces, and marine environment protection.

July 1916 Established as the Ship Equipment Inspection Station under the Shipping Administration Bureau of the Ministry of Posts Telecommunication and Transport  
September 1920 Osaka Branch Office opened  
September 1923   Great Kanto Earthquake
November 1927 Name changed to the Ship Testing Station under the Shipping Administration Bureau of the Ministry of Posts Telecommunication and Transport  
December 1941   Start of the Pacific War (the Attack on Pearl Harbor)
May 1945 Name changed to the Ship Testing Station, Ministry of Transport  
August 1945   End of the Pacific War
April 1950 Establishment of the Transportation Research Institute, Ministry of Transport
(integrated with part of the Railway Research Institute of Japan National Railways in the Engineering Research Division, Ports and Harbors Bureau, Ministry of Transport)
 
May 1958 Tokai Branch Office opened in Tokaimura, Ibaraki Prefecture  
April 1962 Establishment and separation of the Port & Harbor Research Institute, Ministry of Transport  
April 1963 Establishment of the Ship Research Institute, Ministry of Transport  
July 1967 Establishment and separation of the Electronic Navigation Research Institute, Ministry of Transport  
April 1968 Closure of the Hull Test Division (establishment of the Japan Shipbuilding Technology Center)  
July 1970 Establishment and separation of the Traffic Safety & Nuisance Research Institute, Ministry of Transport  
April 1986 Reformation of the research department
April 2001 National Maritime Research Institute was established  
April 2002 Reorganization
