With the Kyoto Protocol now in effect, and based on discussions of a post-Kyoto Protocol, reduction of
greenhouse gases (GHG) has become a social issue. In the field of marine transportation, promotion of a
"modal shift" has been taken up as a policy issue from the viewpoint of GHG reduction. Under these
circumstances, this Center carries out research related to technologies for preparation/evaluation of the
optimum ship allocation plan/navigation plan, etc. considering weather, sea conditions, transportation routes,
and necessary costs. These efforts promote a modal shift, and in turn contribute to realizing a low
carbon society.
