Some FEA examples conducted by LS-DYNA is as follows.

(1)Axial Crushing of Bulbous Bow

In order to investigate the axial crushing mechanism of bulbous bow, a series of finite element analysis were carried out with the bow collapsed by rigid plate. Numerical results were compared with experimental results and shows fairly good agreement.

(2) Collapse of Bulbous Bow in Bending

In ship-to-ship collision, the bulbous bow of striking ship is subjected to horizontal bending moment if struck ship has the forward speed, where both axial stress and bending stress are acting on the section of bulbous bow.

In order to investigate the collapse mechanism of bulbous bow in horizontal bending, a series of finite element analysis were carried out with the bow bended by rigid plate. Numerical results were compared with experimental results. Numerical results were compared with experimental results and shows fairly good agreement.

(3)Large-scale Ship-to-Ship Collision analysis based on assumed collision scenario

Approximately 500,000 nodes and elements are employed. Stress-strain relationship is modeled as elastic-plastic by piecewise linear curve. The effect of sea water, global ship motion and global hull girder horizontal bending moment of struck ship are considered.
