3. Wind calculation

3-1 Calculation method

Added resistance due to winds,, is calculated by the following formula

on the basis of the mean wind speed and wind direction.

 

  

 

In heading winds the drag coefficient, , is derived as following, for example,

 

                   

 

where:

: air density

: projected transverse area above water line,

: mean wind speed

: ship breadth, : projected lateral area above the summer load line,

: length overall,

: distance from the midship section to the center of projected lateral area;

a positive value of  means that the center of the projected lateral area

is located ahead of the midship section.
