Development of an Experimental Wheelchair
Calibration of the Strain Gages
In a calibration of the torque measuring mechanism, an arm with 300 mm of length is set to the experimental wheelchair as shown in the photograph at the right. We have two weights of 3.4 kg (equal to 10 Nm of torque) and one weight of 1.7 kg (equal to 5 Nm of torque). Then we can calibrate the torque in the range of -25 to 25 Nm with 5 Nm steps.
The figure at the right shows the calibrated results. After the first calibration, the wheelchair ran in several hours. And the second calibration was done. From the figure, it is confirmed that both channel 0 (the left wheel) and channel 1 (the right wheel) has enough reproduce performance. Also it is confirmed that the calibrated voltage changes in proportion to the torque in the range of calibration (-25 to 25 Nm).
