September 11, 2000
By Tadashi Sugiura and Koichi Hirata

This simple fish robot, which is build by a student of Tokyo Denki University, Mr. Tadashi Sugiura, is introduced here. Mr. Sugiura is studying for his graduation thesis at Ship Research Institute, from April 2000 to March 2001. The fish robot as shown the below photographs was developed for the practice of machine processing.

A model gearbox assembly is located in the fish robot. Two joints allow the tail to swung left and right. It also allowed for various fin configurations and lengths that were quickly fabricated from balsa wood and easily modified. The model confirmed that this fish robot system swims well, but very slow.
