Double-acting type Stirling Engine

A double-acting Stirling engine has four cylinders. Heat exchangers are connected between a top-side of a piston and a bottom-side of a neighboring piston as shown in belows figure. Then the working space is equivalent to four units of the alpha-type engines. The double-acting type engine is suitable for compact and high power engine. But it is difficult to develop a complex piston drive mechanism and high performance rod seal system.

Piston drive mechanisms of the double-acting Stirling engines, such as a swash plate mechanism and a wobble yoke mechanism, are shown here (in Japanese).
