An Experimental Seme Free-Piston Stirling Engine
Operational Result of the Experimental Semi-free-piston Stirling Engine
As a first step of this study, a simple experimental Semi-free-piston Stirling engine was designed and built, shown in figure to the right. Two springs are located at one side of the power piston provide the return force. Characteristics of the engine may be altered by changing of spring constant, k or value of the load (area of the fin).
The figure to the right shows a sample of the experimental results. This example shows the relationship between frequency and stroke of the power piston, when five kinds of springs are used. This figure shows that the characteristics of the engine are affected strongly by the spring constant, k. In the next step, we will consider applying the Semi-free-piston Stirling engine to the fish robot after we confirm some basic engine characteristics.
