Study on Design and Performance Prediction Methods for Miniaturized Stirling Engine

Suggestion for a practical used Stirling engine

Suggestion for a practical used Stirling engine

In this study, the compact Stirling engine for the portable type generator has been developed. I consider that there are many effective results from the analysis methods to the components' design. I suggest to the practical used Stirling engine with their problems.

About analysis methods

The unique moving tube type heat exchanger is developed, and its heat transfer performance is estimated by the simple method. The method has not reached detail analysis yet. As a next step, we need construct a data base after experiments with the heat exchanger individually.

On the case of the method for the mechanical loss, I confirmed that the analysis which separate the coulomb and viscosity friction losses can estimate suitably. But it is very difficult that the viscosity friction loss is predicted before manufacturing the engine. As a next step, we need construct a data base of many Stirling engines.

I confirmed that the buffer loss can be estimated by the analysis method using the number of heat transfer unit, NTU generally. But it is not enough to discuss about generalizing. Next step, we neet a detail analisis with temperature distribution and gas flow in the buffer space.

About components' design

As the components' design, the method which find the most suitable shape and size is needed.

On the case of the seal devices, this study could consider the effects of the gas leakage. Next step, the seal devices without any friction must be developed.

As the mechanical device for the pistons, I confirmed that the function of the Scotch-yoke mechanism can work enoughly. But I have not discussed about their material and endurance performance. An endurance test is needed as next step.

Ending message

I think that the Stirling engines are practical used soon, when the above problems, a control device for the engine and manufacturing costs are solved.
This study has aimed for the development of the portable generator. On the other hand, we should discuss to use a solar energy and biomass energy like a right figure, when we consider a energy and environment problems recently.
