Announcement

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Workshop is to assess the state of the art of Computational Fluid Dynamics applied to the flow around ship hulls and to provide information to guide future development and application of the methods.

FORMAT

A detailed analysis will be made of the results produced by all participating methods for three test cases. As in the previous Workshops of the same kind, held in Gothenburg (Larsson, 1981; Larsson et al., 1991) and Tokyo (Kodama, 1994), the test cases will be specified by the organizers, who will also collect the results and present them in a format suitable for comparison. Detailed information on each participating method will be presented as well. The Workshop will focus on methods based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations.

ORGANIZERS

Prof Lars Larsson, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden
Prof Fred Stern, Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research, USA
Dr Volker Bertram, Hamburgische Schiffbau-Versuchsanstalt GmbH, Germany

DATE and VENUE

The Workshop will be held Thursday 14 - Saturday 16 September, 2000 at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.   It has been coordinated such that the dates will be between those of the 23rd Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics in France (18-22 September) and the 3rd Numerical Towing Tank Symposium in Tjarno/Sweden (10-13 September).

TEST CASES

This workshop will focus upon validation of RANS simulations for tanker, cargo/container, and combatant hull forms.   The ship geometries to be used in the workshop, along with the available validation data, are shown below.  Note that separate pages with detailed information, along with references and links, are available for each hull.

a. KRISO VLCC2 (KVLCC2)

  1. Stern flow, mean velocities, turbulence at zero Froude number (wind tunnel data)
  2. Surface pressure and limiting streamlines
  3. Resistance at model and full scale Reynolds numbers (no data will be available for validation, but comparisons will be made to estimates)

Focus:  stern flow prediction for a full ship (item 1)

b. KRISO Container Ship (KCS)

  1. Stern flow, mean velocities, surface pressure at one Froude number. With and without propeller.
  2. Wave pattern/wave profile without propeller at one Froude number
  3. Resistance, without propeller for one Froude number
  4. Self propulsion prediction at one Froude number

Focus:  propeller-hull interaction (item 1)

c. US Navy Combatant, DTMB 5415 (5415)

  1. Stern flow, mean velocities without appendages and propeller at one Froude number
  2. wave pattern/wave profile at one Froude number
  3. resistance at one Froude number

Focus:  transom flow and wave field (items 1 & 2)

UNCERTAINTY ASSESSMENT

Numerical uncertainty assessment (i.e., verification) for all participants is required.  It is recommended that the procedures proposed by the 22nd ITTC Resistance Committee be used, however, estimates from alternate methods, including extrapolation of uncertainty estimates from benchmark applications, are acceptable.

The 22nd ITTC adopted the procedures on an interim basis and included them in the following sections of the Quality Manual.

Note that the procedures and methodology are based upon those presented in Stern et al. (1999).
