Dr. Ohnishi, Researcher at the Department of Marine Risk Assessment, received the JNST Award from the Atomic Energy Society of Japan

On Mar. 14, OHNISHI Seiki, Group Leader of the System Engineering and Safety Technology Research Group, received The Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology Most Popular Article Award 2022 from the Atomic Energy Society of Japan.

The Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology Most Popular Article Award 2022 is given to the most viewed and downloaded seven papers on the JNST website in 2021.

Paper Title:
Analysis of radioactive cesium-enriched particles and measurement of their distribution in marine sediment near Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant

Authors:
Seiki Ohnishi, Blair Thornton, Toshikazu Koike, Naoteru Odano, Mitsufumi Asami, So Kamada, Kazunori Nagano, and Tamaki Ura

About awarded research:
This paper describes the results of a survey and analysis of the distribution of radioactive cesium-enriched particles on the seafloor near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. In the field survey, the distribution of radioactive cesium particles in the marine sediment was measured by an underwater robot (ROV) equipped with a radiation detector in the area in front of the power plant. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis of the cesium-enriched particles obtained by the ROV sampler revealed that some of the particles contained titanium and calcium and were produced by dissolution and cooling.
